Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure that enhances the proportions of your nose. Dr. Brauman uses rhinoplasty to create a perfectly proportioned and balanced face.

In addition to aesthetic benefits, rhinoplasty can also address structural defects. Many men and women have this procedure done to improve their breathing function, and some insurance plans cover rhinoplasty under those circumstances.

What issues can rhinoplasty correct?

Rhinoplasty addresses several aesthetic issues, many of which cannot be corrected through any other means. The more common reasons men and women choose rhinoplasty are to treat:

  • Size of the nose relative to the face
  • Nasal asymmetry
  • Width issues at the bridge of the nose
  • Humps or depressions on the bridge of the nose
  • An enlarged, hooked, drooping, or upturned nasal tip
  • Upturned, large, or wide nostrils
  • A deviated septum

Rhinoplasty is a tool Dr. Brauman uses to enhance your facial symmetry and balance.

What is the recovery process like?

During the initial healing process, you may have a medical splint and packing inside your nose to support the altered structure. These materials are removed during your follow-up appointment.

The initial swelling may take a few weeks to subside, and you’re likely to experience bruising in the treatment area. Over the following months, expect to notice gradual changes in the shape and appearance of your nose as the healing process continues and your tissues relax into their new position.

After your procedure, you receive complete recovery instructions, including tips on how to prevent infection, when to come in for follow-up care, and how to manage postoperative pain.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

The most important qualification for rhinoplasty is the desire to feel better about the shape and size of your nose. You should never alter anything about your face or body to fit anyone else’s desires or to try and conform to any outside ideal.

Delaying rhinoplasty or any other plastic surgery until your facial growth is complete is critical because your facial features may change as you continue to develop and grow. Teenagers and very young adults may not be finished growing.

Your health is also an important consideration. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, which means that your outcome depends, in part, on your overall health. You should be physically healthy before rhinoplasty to ensure proper healing and the best possible outcome.

Lastly, you should have a clear understanding of this surgery and realistic goals for what it can accomplish. To discuss nose jobs and other plastic surgery options in more detail, schedule a consultation with Dr. Brauman. He works with you to determine your treatment goals and explains how rhinoplasty can alter the shape and proportion of your nose.
